Las Médulas – Spain’s Ancient Gold Mine and Natural Wonder

Today, this man-altered terrain has been reclaimed by nature. There is no significant gold left in Las Médulas today.
The Romans extracted most of it over two centuries of intensive mining (1st to 3rd century AD), removing an estimated 5 million cubic meters of earth and recovering around 4 to 6 tons of gold. Their hydraulic mining method (ruina montium) was extremely efficient for its time but also destructive — they essentially emptied the mountains.
Today, Las Médulas is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site, and mining is strictly prohibited to preserve its historical and environmental value. While tiny traces of gold might remain in the soil, it’s not economically viable or legally allowed to mine there.
Instead, the true “treasure” of Las Médulas now is its breathtaking landscape, historical significance, and tourism potential.
